Task 1
Gender Representation task
movie,
The Half Of It.
In the film The half of it on Netflix it is apparent how basic the stereotypes for genders still are in the 21st century and although the film is meant to representing the LGBTQ society it still ensures that the stereotypes for both gender and race are firm and is firmly applied. the movie is about a girl who is idolised as a figure of beauty and due to her beauty two of her peers fall madly in love with her without knowing anything about her except the way she looks which is which is a genuine way in which most women are perceived and if a woman is not attractive she should not be sought after. one of the people who are consumed by their lust for her is a stereotypical man, pure brawn no brain and yet he is also sought after whereas the main character is seen as the most implied image of someone within the lesbian society, due to the fact that she is not glamorous and would rather not be seen by their love interest than noticed in even the slightest way.
Music video,
Dear Future husband by Megan Trainor
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShlW5plD_40
in this music video Meghan Trainor addresses the typical stereotypes of a woman her age in this century, she should either be a basic house wife which is a stereotype that has existed for hundreds of years for women or she should be this sexual piece of eye candy. in in some ways Megan does naturally fall into one of the stereotypes yet she still attempts to defy them with her lyrics even though the video is a direct contrast. the video implies a sexual nature but it does not cross over to being seen as vulgar which allows her to still maintain this prissy image
Magazine cover,
PAPER cover by Kim Kardashian
Following the release of Kim Kardashians PAPER cover there was much controversy created due to the fat that Kim Kardashian is very much portrayed as the perfect woman by the media due to her figure and looks. when looking at the photo in detail you can see that Kim is wearing fetish clothes in the form of a latex dress which can be seen as extremely sexual already and then she uses a wine glass to accentuate her figure thereby making her a stereotypical sexual object which is how most young women are viewed by society when they are in the spotlight.
Music video,
Mr Potato head by Melanie Martinez
In this video it is clear that as a woman in the 21st century there are particular expectations in order to be seen as attractive and in reality it is very very difficult for a woman to reach these expectations to be stereotyped as a beautiful person and it also shows that although may be difficult to achieve a woman should still try no matter the risk. in this video Melanie is trying to show the effect of these unrealistic beauty standards and the effects it can have on someone which may eventually lead to them getting body modifications even at the risk of being botched and looking like a complete different person which results in the woman being undesirable. In this video the surgeries are encouraged and paid for my a slightly older man whom is paying for each of the surgeries to ensure that his woman is even more beautiful, almost as if she is a object of his that he can make modifications on unit he is left with the perfect example of beauty and if that is not achieved his loyalty would be very much doubted because nobody would want a woman simply for her personality and attributes right? men would rather have a piece of eye candy at least that's exactly how Melanie Martinez portrays it.
